"About six years ago, when I was trying to frame a full view of the torso of one of my patients, I accidentally captured the bottom part of her face, along with a grimace that looked like an uncomfortable upside-down frown. She reluctantly posed in front of my camera a day or two before a big
operation, ahead of a long road to recovery. About six months later, after completing all of her surgical procedures, she stood in front of my camera, proud, confident, just beaming with joy and relief. That was clearly seen in her upside-down smile. Since that point, whenever I lecture on breast reconstruction, Ishow anonymous photographs of her body, and then zoom in to the lower part of her face. To me, that sliver of pixels represents the essence of my profession."
